Chinese Lanterns

Hello Everybody!

When I saw this new Chinese Lanterns die in the Poppystamps collection, I had to put it at the top of my list! My mother always had easy growing Chinese Lanterns planted all around our house, and they will always remind me of my mom. I love to see them in vases, instantly drawn to their papery feel and their dimensional balloony shapes. You will love this die too!

This card is easy-ish to make, but it involves some precision paper piecing and alignment. I started out by cutting the lanterns on a large piece of slate grey paper, then cut them out again in dark orange and green. I inserted a piece of light orange paper behind the grey square, then trimmed the edges so that the top leaf extends off the page. I then added the Painted Square Frame, and inserted the green lanterns inside the grey space and glued everything in place.

This paper looks white in this photo, thanks to the raging storm outside and the extra lighting in my craft room, but it is a smooth shade of light grey. You can see how I added the light orange square behind the grey, and worked the green lantern cut in place until I had a nice fit.

Once everything was adhered securely, I carefully trimmed each dark orange lantern one at a time and glued them right on top of the green lanterns already in place. The combination of raised lantern blossoms and inlay leaves give this card a fun feel too! Once everything was in place, I added a tiny butterfly and a few golden pearls, and mounted the grey panel on a white card stock base.

  12. I do love that Chinese Lantern die and you have made a bright, lovely card with it. That is nice that it reminds you of your mother. I feel that way about Lilly of the Valley we had planted all along the side of our house.
