Surprise Gift Card Holder
By Carol McFarland

Hello friends! I am back today with a gift card holder disguised as a wrapped package! For today’s project I used 2427 Lattice Plate, 2803 Satin Ribbon, and 2794 Trimmed Trees dies. The design for the pull up “mechanism” is something I made up on the fly and I will explain it as I go through the steps.

First I wanted you to see the open gift card holder and how that works. It’s nothing complicated. First, I die cut the Lattice plate out of pink card stock. After carefully taking the die cut off of the die, I put Press n Seal on the front side of the die cut and liquid glue all over the back of the little squares while they were still encased in the frame. Next, I turned the the Press n Seal and die cut over and onto a plain panel of the same pink card stock. Then I rubbed over the whole area to adhere the little squares but not the frame (which had no glue on it). Then, after waiting a few minutes for the glue to dry, I carefully pulled up the Press n Seal and the frame. It left the squares on the solid panel like you see in the completed project.

Next, I assembled the bow, looking at the front and back of the envelope it comes in for a visual, using liquid glue again. I decided to ink blend some darker red ink where the bow might be shaded from light. I used a Post It note to mask off the areas around the places I wanted to ink blend. I think these bow loops look so realistic! I added a few Trimmed Trees as a holiday embellishment, hoping that they looked like pine sprigs. Then I adhered the whole bow to the top center of the package, not the lid, so it wouldn’t get torn or bent when opening and closing the box.

The dies for this bow are so pretty and dainty, like the prettiest bows we all love. You can make different styles of bows depending on how many of the loops and tails you want. There are lots of possibilities with this die set!

Next, I cut down the Lattice Die cut to be 3 1/3″ x 5 1/2″ for a tall box look. Then I die cut a white piece the same size and adhered it to the back of the pink one with tear tape around the sides and bottom only, leaving the top open for the box “mechanism” to slide in and out. I so could have made the back out of the same pink as the front, but I ran out of it!

Next, I cut a smaller rectangle from white card stock again which would be the piece that holds the gift card. That piece is about 2 3/4″ x 4 1/2″ and I used an old punch that makes rounded slots for the card to be held. You could use an Exacto knife to make slits instead to fit the four corners of the gift card. I die cut a long thin rectangle for the box “lid” and used liquid glue for the lid to be attached to the white sliding card.

I hope you are having fun making cards, tags and gift card holders for the coming holidays! After making this first gift card holder, it will be easier to make more now that the guesswork is done. Will you be trying this or something like it?

Thanks for visiting our blog today and Happy Holidays!
