Blog Blitz: Watercolored Dogwood

The Blog Blitz is in full swing and I've got a Spring card for you today!  The dogwood tree is the State tree where I live (in Virginia, US) and it's always been one of my favorites!  So I couldn't wait to use the Falling Dogwood Blossoms die.  This is a full A2 size die and it is gorgeous!  As you can see, I used it as a reverse die with watercoloring on the layer below the actual die cut.  To start the card, I die cut one piece and then used the die to emboss another piece of watercolor paper.  

I embossed the second piece so that I knew exactly how to paint the blooms so that you could see them through the die cut.  When you paint or color the embossed piece, the embossed lines disappear.  I also painted a couple of blossoms that I popped out of the die cut piece.

The next step was to stamp the sentiment and add a bit of blended blue sky.  Finally, I added the die cut piece over the painted piece with foam tape and added the few painted blossoms on top.

  7. The dogwood is so beautiful. I think I’d also try doing the same thing, but using texture paste with the die cut/stencil for some or all the flowers. Gorgeous card!!! TFS

  81. Hi JJ. This card is stunning and the flowers are an appropriate background (or should I say foreground) for any number of sentiments. Thank you for the tutorial, and for showing the water-colored layer uncovered. It helps to see that coloring ‘in the lines’ does not always make for fabulous art. I can hardly wait to try this technique out myself.

  111. Dogwood blooms are one of my favorites too. I get so excited when the Dogwoods and the Redbud trees bloom at the same time announcing Spring is beginning! Thanks for sharing how you embossed the flowers so you could tell where to paint the flowers on your inside layer. This is a new technique for me and one that I will try.
