A Sweet Birthday Card with the Poppystamps Resting Cardinal
By Jyoti Adhikari
There is something timeless about a bright red cardinal sitting among soft florals. For today’s card, I wanted to create a design that feels warm, cheerful, and perfect for celebrating a special birthday. The Resting Cardinal die immediately became the star of the card, and I paired it with soft peach tones and patterned papers from the Nutmeg Forest 6×6 paper pack to create a layered, elegant background.
Creating the Patterned Background
To start, I created the card base using Accent Opaque 100 lb cardstock, which is one of my favorite cardstocks for sturdy card bases. For the main background panel, I chose a beautiful foiled pattern paper from the Nutmeg Forest 6×6 pack. The delicate gold foiling in the pattern adds just the right amount of shine and texture while keeping the overall look soft and warm.

Adding an Embossed Center Panel
To create more dimension, I added a vertical strip of peach cardstock in the center of the card. I embossed this panel using the Cheerful Floral 3D Embossing Folder, which creates gorgeous raised floral details. The subtle texture from the embossing adds interest without overwhelming the design and helps frame the focal elements beautifully.

Layering the Horizontal Accent Strip
Next, I added a horizontal strip of patterned paper from the Nutmeg Forest paper pack across the middle of the card. To give this strip a decorative finish, I lined both edges with delicate scalloped borders cut from the Scalloped Pinpoint Frames die set. These small details help tie the entire design together while adding a clean and polished look.

Creating the Cardinal Focal Point
The focal point of the card is the adorable Resting Cardinal die from Poppystamps. I die-cut the bird using red cardstock and layered the pieces together to bring the cardinal to life. I placed the bird on top of a soft peach floral die-cut and added a ribbon accent behind it for extra dimension.

The sentiment, “It’s a Special Day,” was stamped using Lipstick Red dye ink from Simon Says Stamp. The stamp comes from the Birthday Banners stamp set by Poppystamps, and I love how the bold red ink coordinates perfectly with the cardinal.
To finish the card, I added a few red embellishments to echo the color of the cardinal and bring balance to the overall design. These small accents help draw the eye across the card while keeping the focus on the sweet bird and birthday sentiment.
If you enjoy creating layered cards with die cuts and texture, this combination of patterned paper, embossing, and dimensional elements is a wonderful way to build a rich and interesting design.
Hugs,
Jyoti
