A Birthday Bash of Penguins | By Jyoti Adhikari
Today I’m sharing a truly joyful slimline birthday card that instantly became one of my favorites. This design brings together the sweetest assortment of penguins from different die sets, each one full of character and charm. Set against a dreamy mixed-media background in warm peaches, pinks, and soft textures, these party-ready penguins come to life with balloons, cake, hats, glasses, and lots of happy details.

Creating the Mixed Media Background
For the backdrop, I wanted something festive but still soft enough to let the characters shine.
I began with my gelli plate, layering acrylic paints in pinks and oranges to create a warm, cheerful base. Once the first print was pulled, I added subtle textures through stamping and stencilling, giving the background delicate speckles and patterns reminiscent of confetti.

Die-Cutting the Penguins & Party Elements
This card features a few of my favorite dies so far:
- Birthday Penguin
- Jubilee Penguin
- Fancy Party Penguin
- Festive Balloons
- Layer Cake Die
Each penguin has its own little personality, some with glasses, some holding balloons, some wearing dotted party hats. The layering dies allowed me to bring depth and cuteness to every single one, and the tiny details—feet, beaks, glasses added so much charm.
The layered birthday cake, complete with candles, ties the whole celebration together.

Assembling the Slimline Scene
Once all the pieces were ready, I arranged them across the long slimline panel, letting the penguins form a playful parade. Their hats point in different directions, balloons float above them, and little hearts and stars fill the empty spaces for added movement.
Each penguin is popped up on foam tape for dimension, giving the card delightful shadows and a lively feel. The sentiment “Happy Birthday” sits neatly on the bottom right, grounding the playful scene.

Finishing Touches for Extra Charm
To complete the design, I added tiny embellishments, stars, hearts, and sparkles that enhance the texture of the background. The soft pinks and oranges pair beautifully with the black-and-white penguins, creating a cheerful yet elegant balance.
The card is mounted onto a crisp white slimline base, and paired with a bright fuchsia envelope for the perfect pop of color.

The Penguin Party Parade card is a celebration of color, texture, and die-cut whimsy. There’s nothing like watching a card come to life as each little character finds its place on the panel.
I hope this inspires you to mix your die-cuts with mixed media backgrounds, you get the best of both worlds: clean shapes with rich, artistic texture behind them.
Hugs
Jyoti
