A Cheerful Concept
For this card, I wanted to create something lighthearted, fun, and full of movement, perfect for a joyful birthday celebration. Penguins always bring a smile, and pairing them with a little road-trip moment felt like the perfect way to capture that birthday excitement. The slimline format allowed me to stretch the scene out and really let the story unfold across the card front.
Creating the Mixed Media Background
I began with a warm, textured mixed media background to set the tone for the card. Soft peach, blush, and golden hues were layered together, with subtle text details peeking through for added interest. This warm backdrop creates a beautiful contrast against the cooler tones of the penguins and the car, helping the focal images stand out while still feeling cohesive.
Building the Penguin Party Scene
The main focal point of the card features the Joyride Car die from Poppystamps, filled with birthday excitement. I used the Birthday Penguin from the Penguin Party collection as the driver, surrounded by a stack of gifts created with the Frilly Gifts die. Layering the car and penguin pieces with foam tape adds dimension and gives the scene a playful, pop-off-the-card effect.
To complete the story, I added the Jubilee Penguin from the same Penguin Party collection on the side, as if he’s waiting to join the celebration. This extra character adds charm and balance to the composition while guiding the eye across the card.
Finishing Touches and Sentiment
I finished the card with a simple “Happy Birthday” sentiment placed in the corner, keeping the focus on the cheerful scene. The clean sentiment works perfectly with the busy background and layered die cuts, tying everything together without overwhelming the design.
This card was such a joy to create, from the warm mixed media background to the playful penguin details. It’s one of those designs that instantly feels happy and celebratory, making it perfect for sending birthday smiles.
