Summer birthday
by Tina Wilstrup

Hello everyone! Can you believe it’s July? The last 4 months feel more like years. Right? It’s officially summer though and we can at least enjoy the wonder of flowers. So today I have a dry embossed, watercolored card for you.

I started by applying ink to the inside of the embossing folder. I used Distress ink, since they’re easy to clean. I spritzed a bit of water, wiped off the flower part as best I could, and laid the watercolor cardstock on top. I then ran it through my die cutting machine. Make sure you follow directions for your machine, these are thick embossing folders.

I first heat set the ink with my heat tool and then applied a dark yellow ink – pad directly to paper – over the sunflower. Notice that I got some yellow into the blue background. I’ll cover that later. With a waterbrush I carried some of the ink to the rest of the petals. I again made sure it was completely dry before lightly running over my embossing ink. I did get more ink on than planned, but I had just reinked my pad. So that’s something to keep in mind. I added a clear  glittery embossing powder and heat set that. Then I used my finger to dab embossing ink to the middle of the flower and applied an embossing powder that’s a mix of gold, silver and copper.

I then cut my scallopped frame and placed over the sunflower. Here I’ve already cut off a couple of corners but you can still see that it’s quite off set. I adhered the flower and frame to a white cardbase.

I cut a couple of butterflies and a happy birthday sentiment from glitter cardstock. I absolutely love this teal color and it’s the perfect contrast to the yellow flower.

I adhered the sentiment cuts and then played around with placing the butterflies strategically to cover my ink pad mistakes from earlier. I didn’t cover all of them, but most.

So there you have my sparkly flower card, and in case you missed it the challenge theme this month is Glim and Glam – add some sparkle.

See you next time. In the meantime, happy crafting!
